Norway is One Step Closer to Gambling Ban
Nov 21, 2007
Category: General Poker News
For some time it
has been in the news that the Norwegian Minister for Culture and Church affairs
has been on a mission to create laws in Norway that are equal to the online
gambling laws of the United States.
This man Tronde Giske is the Minister for Culture and Church Affairs and he has introduced a bill that if passed will ban financial institutions from processing online gambling transactions as early as next year. This piece of legislation is very similar to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act as it does not directly ban online players, however it does cease the way they would place money in their online accounts and collect monies won from online casinos.
This proposed piece of legislation would be discussed until the middle of February, after this it will be passed on to Parliament where Tronde Giske expects that it will be passed into law in the spring term of Parliament.
This proposal if passed will eliminate offshore online gaming operators and leave the citizens of Norway to use the state run online casinos run by Norsk Tipping who had a revenue of €1.16 billion in the past year. This will also keep a monopoly in online gambling in Norway that is state run.
