Is Sweden’s Monopoly Starting to Crumble
The ruling party, the Moderates in Sweden have decided they will not longer give their support for the online government owned Svenska Spel, during a weekend conference in Gavle decided they would not support this online gambling operator and voted to de-monopolize the gambling industry in Sweden. They also voted that Svenska Spel should be privatized, where before the Moderate party had ruled against privatization for Svenska Spel.
During this conference there were arguments from Tomas Tobe MP to which the Moderate party were convinced to make this vote that the European Union has sought in past negotiations.
In Tobes arguments he said they must change the current regulations and instead regulate and license gambling operators.
While there are several governing parties in Sweden; the Moderates, the Peoples Party, the Centre Party, and the Christian Democrats, of these parties the only one opposing the regulation and listening of gambling operators in the Christian Democrats.
This decision is felt that it may have been made due to the questions from the European Union, Tobe had also made it a point to discuss the issue of privatizing gambling and licensing would not only be good for Sweden but it would save them from being compelled to take action before the European Court of Justice.
