More On Bodog Troubles
1st Technology argued that the software being used to complete betting transactions by Bodog was their intellectual property. The ruling regarding copyright infringement, in this case forced the closure of all domain names associated with Bodog and founder Calvin Ayre. Additionally Ayre and Bodog are ordered to pay damages of more than 49 million dollars. The results had a profound impact on Bodog's online poker, sportsbet, US online casino and entertainment community, changing the name to NewBodog.com for all the customers affected by the change.
They may not be the only site to encounter this trouble. Sportingbet, Chartwell Technology and Playtech all operate similar systems, however CryptoLogic is thought to be unaffected by the application of the copyright infringement.
In the affidavit filed by 1st Technology LLC a motivation for seeking Bodog.com and Calvin Ayre was made clear. "Ayre gloats about his companies' ability to operate above American Law." This may indicate that future extention of the ruleing may not effect the above mentioned examples or others who are currently using the system on their sites. With great consideration that the software involved is associated with money transfers, 1st Technology LLC may simply be trying to ensure that they are able to avoid prosecution under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006.
