UIGEA 270-Day Deadline Come & Goes Uneventfully
The US government was given 9 months - 270 days - since the signing of a
Port Security Bill with the unrelated Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) attached, to write up guidelines and regulations for the UIGEA. That deadline came on July 10th and passed uneventfully.
Not only has the government failed to meet the deadline, they seem to have
absolutely no comments, or knowledge for that matter, concerning the ending regulations. Many have attempted to contact the Department of Justice (DoJ) for any information regarding the regulations, the deadline, and if/when these regulations will be completed.
On the DoJ end of the phone, no knowledgeable response could be given.
Instead, calls were referred to the White House at 202-741-6043 - another dead end. Since the UIGEA cites US financial institutions as being responsible for stopping transactions to online gambling operations, callers were directed to the US Federal Reserve, in control of banking. Once again, no one seems to know anything.
Some callers were given a web site address hosted by the FBI for further information. Yet another dead end as the only information concerning the
UIGEA was offering the US people this handy piece of advice - go to any land-based casino and gamble all you like, just don't do it online.
At this point, the US government seems to be completely mindless as to the
UIGEA regulations, and in some cases, as to the UIGEA itself. There's no telling how long it could be until, if ever, we see legislative guidelines set forth as to how the UIGEA is to be enforced.
