On Saturday October the 27th the Palo Alto nonprofit group Decision Education Foundation held an event entitled 'Evening with Annie Duke' to introduce her into the organization on the board of directors. The organization helps children make better life decisions and Annie wants to be a part of that process. The group uses experience in academia and industry to teach how to make good decisions and teaches kids how to judge whether you are making an informed decision or not and how to decipher between the two.
Annie plans on working with the group and use poker as a part of the education process. She will be working in international schools as well as local ones. During the event on Saturday Annie talked about her life as a poker player and how is has helped her in her decision making in her work and life. "Poker is this incredible game of skill that really is the ultimate decision-making problem," Duke said Monday in the San Jose Mercury News. "Lots of people frame (poker) as a math or a probability problem. But I really do frame it as a decision-making problem, I talk about different alternatives."
Duke is ready to become involved with the group and looks forward to helping students. She wants to help students make a more educated decision instead of emotional decisions. "How we make decisions shapes the quality of our lives," Duke said. "I know that if I didn't understand what makes a good decision, I wouldn't be a success at what I do. And for kids, who are making decisions that will significantly impact their safety, their health and their future, it is a critical skill - and a huge gap in their education."
It has not been stated whether the program will have students playing actual poker but the program recognizes that the philosophies of poker do coincide with the philosophies of the organization.
