Annie Duke featured in Psychology Today
Aug 2, 2007
Category: Poker Players
When Annie Duke appears in a national publication, usually the magazine has something to do with poker. In most cases one will find her in magazines like "Bluff" or "Card Player". Rarely is she asked to do an interview for a publication with the motto, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar".
Psychology Today is a publication is dedicated to the inner working of our minds. Generally this magazine sorts out such important issues like how somebody can compulsively eat White Castle food until it takes a team of EMS professionals and a team of engineers to work out how to pull their 1200 lb posterior out of their home. Frequently they also engage in subjects as lycanthropy, or people who think they turn into wolves, and misanthropy, or people who turn into hermits.
This month though they have taken a break from their monthly columns and instead decided to pick the brain of Annie Duke. This interview is a good read for anyone who wants to hone his or her poker instincts.
Psychology Today was not, in reality, interested in what she had to say about poker, but were instead interested in her finely honed instincts, and the intuition that makes her a top pro in the game. A well-known necessity for anyone who likes to play poker is being able to construe what your opponent is doing. A poker player who can decode their opponent's personal body language to determine what they are doing may as well have just been handed a blank check. In the interview Annie talks about her intuition, how experience plays into her decisions, and what we can learn from children about picking up tells.
