Roy Winston Claims Major Win
Roy Winston, a medical doctor and poker pro, won over 1.5 million dollars in the 2007 Borgata Poker Open at the World Poker Tour in New Jersey.
Winston advanced to the final table with the chip lead and kept a strong hold that protected his lead. Winston defeated several opponents at the final table including Haralabos Voulgaris and Mike Matusow. He then began heads-up play with Heung Yoon. They battled back and forth for several hours and over 80 hands dealt. Yoon was down 4-1 in chips when heads-up play began but soon evened out the playing field.
In the final hand, Winston had pocket fours against Yoon who had ace king. With the flop came queen diamond, six diamond, four hearts, it gave Winston trips. Winston went all in and Yoon called him. The turn card was a deuce so Yoon drew dead and the tournament was over.
In second place Yoon went home with an impressive $832,725, especially
this being his first try at a major tournament. Winston went home
with a silver watch, an entry into the $25,000 buy-in WPT World
Championship in April, 2008 and $1,575,280 first-place money. Winston
did a phenomal job beating out the 560 players who entered the
tournament and he also finished 26th in the 2007 World Series of Poker
Main Event.
