WSOP Champions Invitational Won By Tom McEvoy
This year the World Series of Poker held a special tournament for past champions of the Main Event. Twenty Champions were invited to the Inaugural Champions Invitational to compete against each other and the winner was none other than the 1983 Main Event Champion Tom McEvoy.
McEvoy was able to outlast the talented field to face Robert Varkonyi, the 2002 Main Event Winner, in heads up play. McEvoy earned his win by taking down the last hand with a higher flush. McEvoy earned a vintage fully restored 1970 Corvette Stingray as well as the first ever Binion Cup trophy.
McEvoy commented “This is the first time he (Jack Binion) handed me a trophy instead of money.” The Commissioner of the WSOP Jeffrey Pollack commented that the invitational brought together the greatest names in the game of poker. Those included in the event were Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth and Huck Seed.
McEvoy also commented: “I think I proved I can compete at the highest level against the best player in the world. I’m totally overjoyed. One of the reasons I was so determined to win this was to re-establish myself and prove, not only to myself, but to everybody else, that I can still do this.”
