WSOP Event No. 47 Winner Ryan Hughes
Event No. 47 of the World Series of Poker was a $1,500 buyin Seven Card Stud High Low Split tournament that started on June 26th and finished on June 28th. There were 544 poker players entered into the event and they created a total prize pool of $742,560 dollars. The top 56 players in the event would cash.
This event was the second of two Seven-Card Stud High-Low Split events that were included in the 2008 World Series of Poker schedule. The first event was the $5,000 buy in World Championship that was won by Sebastian Ruthenburg.
Seven Card Stud High Low Split was the first ever "split" game to be played at the World Series of Poker. It was first introduced 32 years ago and in 1976 Doc Green became the first Seven-Card Stud High-Low Split World Champion and won $12,750 dollars for first place.
The game disappeared off the schedule in 1986 and after there was some protesting done by Stud High Low enthusiasts it was reinstates and has been on the WSOP schedule ever since. In 1995 the World Series of Poker started including at least two such events.
This year's winner was Ryan Hughes, a 27 year old professional poker player from Phoenix, Arizona. This was his second WSOP gold bracelet win. He won the $2,000 buy-in Seven-Card Stud High-Low Split championship in 2007. He won $183,341 dollars for his first place win.
