WSOP Event No. 50 Winner Marty Smyth
Event No. 50 of the World Series of Poker was a $10,000 buyin Pot Limit Omaha World Championship tournament that got under way on June 29th and finished on July 1st. The top 36 players in the tournament would see a piece of the record making prize pool.
There wee a total of 381 players entered into the tournament to create a record prize pool of $3,581,400 dollars. With they buyin at $10,000 dollars per player this made for the largest ever Pot Limit Omaha tournament prize pool in the history of poker.
This was one of the few "World Champion" events in the World Series of Poker that are also gold bracelet events. So the winner of the event gets a gold bracelet and the World Champion title for Pot Limit Omaha. At this year's World Series of Poker there are going to be 10 World Champions total.
The final table of Event No. 50 was played on the main stage and was filmed by ESPN to be aired at a later date. The winner of the event and the Pot Limit World Champion is Marty Smyth. He is a professional poker player from Belfast, Ireland.
This was his first WSOP gold bracelet win and his second time to cash at the World Series of Poker. He has only made one cash previously at the WSOP at the $1,500 buyin Pot Limit Omaha event that was held earlier this year where he finished in 39th place. Marty Smyth won $859,549 dollars for his first place finish.
Before he began his career as a professional poker player he worked as a civil servant. He said, “It was a dead-end job, I was lucky to find poker.” He has before the fifth Irish national in history to win a World Series of Poker gold bracelet.
When he made his way to the final table he was ranked fourth in the chip count. “It’s more of a relief (to win), than anything,” he said. WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack handed him his first WSOP gold bracelet and said, “I present to you this gold and diamond bracelet which you can now take back to the emerald isle.”
